Galstaun College extended its child safe culture into digital spaces with Saasyan Assure, giving pastoral staff real time insights to protect and support students online.
Background
Galstaun College is Australia's only K-12 Armenian school, located in New South Wales. The college has a deeply rooted educational philosophy built on cultural preservation, weaving traditions such as dance, music, and historical reenactments into a curriculum centred on Armenian history and language.
As the college evolved to meet contemporary international standards, integrating digital technologies into teaching and learning became essential to enhancing both inclusivity and educational outcomes. The college embraced this evolution with purpose, but doing so raised a question that sits at the heart of every forward thinking school: how do you carry your child safe values into digital spaces with the same conviction you apply to the physical campus?
Problem
Galstaun College's commitment to child safety is woven into every aspect of its culture. The challenge was extending that same standard online. As students increasingly used digital devices for learning, including their own personal devices under a bring your own device (BYOD) model, the college needed a way to safeguard students across all endpoints, not just managed school devices.
Beyond simply blocking harmful content, the college wanted technology that could actively support its pastoral care model. Teachers and wellbeing staff needed timely, actionable insights that would allow them to have meaningful conversations with students about relationships, resilience, and healthy digital habits before concerns grew into serious problems. A blunt content filter was not enough. What the college needed was visibility, context, and the ability to act early.
At the same time, the solution needed to be genuinely usable by non technical staff. Pastoral care at Galstaun College is a shared responsibility across the teaching community, not a function delegated solely to IT, and any technology put in place needed to reflect that.
Solution
Galstaun College deployed Saasyan Assure, a cloud based monitoring and alerting platform, alongside the Saasyan On Premises Web Filter, creating a layered approach to digital safety that covered every device on the school network.
The On Premises Web Filter required no software installation on individual devices, making it practical for a school environment where BYOD and unmanaged endpoints are part of daily life. It inspected encrypted traffic, enforced Safe Mode across search engines and video platforms, and applied age appropriate content policies that could be configured by year level or time of day.
Saasyan Assure complemented this with real time intelligence that went well beyond filtering. Key capabilities included:
-
Real time wellbeing alerts. Staff received timely notifications when students accessed or searched for concerning content, enabling early intervention rather than reactive responses after an incident had already occurred.
-
Pastoral care insights. The platform gave teachers and wellbeing staff the contextual information needed to guide purposeful conversations with students around relationships, resilience, and healthy living, transforming weekly pastoral sessions from routine check ins into genuinely informed interactions.
-
Unified compliance and wellbeing reporting. Assure's reporting tools simplified both compliance obligations and ongoing wellbeing monitoring, giving staff a single, coherent view of student digital behaviour without creating information overload.
-
Intuitive access for non technical staff. The platform was designed to be adopted quickly by educators and pastoral teams without IT involvement, ensuring that the people closest to students had direct access to the insights they needed.
Outcomes
The deployment of Saasyan Assure transformed how Galstaun College approaches student safety and pastoral care across five meaningful dimensions.
The college's child safe culture, previously strongest in its physical spaces, now extends with equal conviction into the digital environment. Students are safeguarded across every device on the network, and the same standards of safety and respect that define life on campus now apply to online interactions as well.
Pastoral care became more purposeful and more effective. Weekly sessions are now guided by timely, relevant insights rather than general impressions, allowing staff to address concerns around relationships, resilience, and digital wellbeing with genuine specificity.
Early intervention became a reality rather than an aspiration. With alerts reaching staff before situations escalated, support was able to reach students at the moment it was most needed rather than after the fact.
The IT team saw a meaningful reduction in administrative overhead. Assure's cloud based design and agentless filtering meant that deployment and ongoing management placed minimal demands on technical resources, freeing the team to focus elsewhere.
And across the college community, staff took ownership of the platform quickly. Clear resources and an intuitive interface meant that pastoral and wellbeing teams could act confidently and independently, making digital safety a genuinely shared responsibility rather than a technical afterthought.
As the Galstaun College Leadership Team reflected, Assure made it simple to bring their child safe principles into the digital world while supporting modern learning, and pastoral care has become more insightful and effective as a result.
